Clipstone at War Event: A Remarkable Weekend at the Historic Clipstone Headstocks
This past weekend, the historic Clipstone Headstocks were brought to life with the “Clipstone at War” event, held on 20th and 21st July 2024. The event was a tribute to the resilience and unity of the Clipstone community during wartime, and it was a privilege to be a part of it. Singing alongside the talented Lah Di Dahs, we transported visitors back to the 1940s, celebrating the era with music, history, and camaraderie.

A Journey Back in Time
The Clipstone Headstocks, towering symbols of the area’s rich industrial heritage, provided the perfect backdrop for this immersive event. As visitors arrived, they were greeted by vintage vehicles, re-enactors in period uniforms, and displays that vividly depicted life during wartime. The atmosphere was fantastic, with the air buzzing with excitement and nostalgia.
Musical Highlights
Performing alongside the Lah Di Dahs was a true highlight of the event. Our repertoire of wartime classics brought smiles to faces and even a few tears of remembrance. Songs like “We’ll Meet Again” and “The White Cliffs of Dover” resonated deeply with the audience, many of whom sang along and shared their personal connections to the era. The Lah Di Dahs’ harmonious vocals and period costumes added an authentic touch, making our performances a memorable part of the weekend.

Community Spirit
The “Clipstone at War” event was more than just a historical reenactment; it was a celebration of community spirit. Local residents, history enthusiasts, and visitors from afar came together to honour the past and enjoy the weekend. There were stalls offering foods, crafts, and memorabilia, as well as educational displays about Clipstone’s role during the war.
One of the most touching moments was hearing stories from those who lived through the war or had family members who did. Their tales of resilience and determination added a personal dimension to the historical facts and made the event all the more poignant.
Educational and Entertaining
The event was not only entertaining but also educational. Re-enactments of key wartime activities, demonstrations of 1940s crafts, and talks from historians provided valuable insights into the era. Children and adults alike learned about the importance of the Clipstone Colliery during the war and the vital role played by the local community.
Preserving History
Efforts to preserve the Clipstone Headstocks and their legacy were highlighted throughout the weekend. The headstocks, now a heritage site, stand as a testament to the area’s industrial past and wartime contributions. Funds raised from the event will go towards maintaining these iconic structures and supporting future heritage projects.
A Successful Weekend
The “Clipstone at War” event was a resounding success, thanks to the hard work of organisers, volunteers, performers, and participants. It was a weekend filled with music, history, and heartfelt tributes to a remarkable era. Being a part of it, especially through music, was an honour and a joy.
Looking Ahead
As we reflect on the weekend, we look forward to future events that continue to celebrate and preserve our rich heritage. The “Clipstone at War” event was a powerful reminder of the importance of community, history, and remembering those who came before us.
Thank you to everyone who attended, supported, and participated in this unforgettable event. Let’s keep the spirit of Clipstone alive, honouring our past while looking forward to the future.

What an incredible day at the Veterans Lunch in Sleaford as part of the Armed Forces Day and D-Day 80 Commemorations!
I had the privilege of meeting one of Britain’s last remaining D-Day veterans, Les Budding, who is now 97. Les was only 18 when he served on Landing Craft Flak 34, providing covering fire for the first wave of troops at Sword Beach on 6 June 1944.
Les shared some amazing stories about his time during the war. He joined the Royal Marines at 17 and, after training in Scotland, was part of a crew of 85 on a landing craft headed for Normandy. Their mission was to protect the main invasion force from attacks by the Luftwaffe and other threats. Les talked about the false start due to bad weather and how the RAF played a crucial role in keeping enemy aircraft at bay.
He vividly remembered the intense moments of D-Day and how survival often felt like “the luck of the draw.” Les also spoke fondly of his sergeant, Jack Grimsey, who was tragically killed in action just a day after D-Day. Les still keeps a framed photograph of Jack to this day.
After the war, Les returned to his sweetheart Doris, and they were married for 71 years. He now lives near Sleaford, Lincolnshire, and remains modest about his heroism, insisting he was “just one of many.” Meeting Les was a humbling experience, and his stories are a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by so many.
Hearing Les’s experiences first-hand was a deeply moving experience. He described how, at such a young age, he and his comrades faced unimaginable challenges. His account of the day’s events, the chaos, and the bravery shown by so many brought a new level of understanding to what we often read in history books. The personal touch of his story, especially his fond remembrance of his sergeant and friend Jack Grimsey, highlighted the deep bonds formed in the most testing of times.
Les’s story doesn’t end with the war. After returning to his beloved Doris, he built a life in Lincolnshire, and their 71 years of marriage is a testament to enduring love and resilience. Despite the hardships of the past, Les remains a modest man, emphasising that he was just one of many who did their duty. His humility and strength of character are truly inspirational.
This experience at the Veterans Lunch was not just a performance for me; it was a chance to connect with history and to honour those who have given so much. It’s crucial that we continue to remember and celebrate these heroes. Their stories need to be heard and shared, ensuring that the legacy of their bravery and sacrifice lives on.
Let’s continue to honour and remember these incredible heroes.

Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the Flying Nightingales at RAF Blakehill Farm
I had the honour of being invited to sing at the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the first flight of the Flying Nightingales. This significant event took place on Thursday, 13th June 2024, at the historic site of RAF Blakehill Farm.
Who Were the Flying Nightingales?
The Flying Nightingales were a remarkable group of female nurses and medical staff who bravely served during World War II. They were part of the Air Evacuation Service, transporting wounded soldiers from the battlefields of Europe back to Britain. These courageous women flew into war zones, provided critical care mid-air, and played a pivotal role in saving countless lives. Their dedication and bravery earned them the fitting nickname, “Flying Nightingales.”
The 80th Anniversary Commemoration
The 80th anniversary event at RAF Blakehill Farm was a fitting tribute to these incredible women. RAF Blakehill Farm itself is steeped in history, having served as a vital airfield during the war. The site was a perfect location to honour the legacy of the Flying Nightingales and reflect on their invaluable contributions.
As a vintage singer with a deep appreciation for the music and history of the 1940s, it was an immense privilege to be part of this commemoration. The atmosphere was poignant, with attendees including families, senior members of the RAF and history enthusiasts. Singing timeless classics from the era, I aimed to evoke the spirit and resilience of those who lived through those challenging times.
Reflecting on Their Legacy
The event was not only a celebration of the past but also a reminder of the bravery and compassion that defines the Flying Nightingales’ legacy. Their stories of courage and dedication continue to inspire us today. Meeting some of the members families was incredibly moving and reinforced the importance of remembering and honouring our history.
A Day to Remember
The 80th anniversary of the Flying Nightingales at RAF Blakehill Farm was a day filled with reflection, gratitude, and reverence. It was a privilege to contribute to the commemoration and to keep the memory of these extraordinary women alive through music. Their legacy serves as a powerful reminder of the strength and compassion that can emerge even in the darkest of times.

Don’t miss out on this spectacular night of nostalgia and entertainment!

I believe that every celebration deserves a touch of timeless elegance and unforgettable melodies. Recently, we had the pleasure of being part of a truly special occasion – Rodney’s 80th Birthday Party at the charming Lees Hall Golf Club. The experience was nothing short of magical, and the lovely feedback from Diana, our valued client, only adds to the joy we feel in sharing this story.
What sets our performances apart is not just the music but the personalised touch we bring to each event. Accompanied by my husband, Darren, who expertly DJ’ed between sets, we ensured the perfect blend of melodies, creating an ambience tailored to the needs of the guests. It’s wonderful to know that our attention to detail in managing the volume for dancing and conversation, as well as keeping the party schedule on track, contributed to a seamless and enjoyable experience for everyone.
The moment of joy when lighting the candles and singing happy birthday to Diana’s dad was truly special. It’s moments like these that make our work incredibly rewarding and memorable. The Hokey Pokey dance brought everyone together, adding an interactive element to the evening. I firmly believe that the success of an event lies in these small, magical touches that create lasting memories.
What is most lovely is Diana’s mention of our personal involvement in the celebration. We didn’t just perform and leave; we became a part of the dancing, chatting, and overall celebration.
Diana’s initial contact through our website and the easy process of filling out a form and making a deposit are reflective of our commitment to making the booking process hassle-free for our clients. Darren’s proactive communication to ensure the schedule aligns with the client’s expectations is a testament to our dedication to delivering a first-rate service.
Diana’s closing words, expressing her readiness to book us again without hesitation, validate our mission to provide not just excellent musical entertainment but an all-encompassing experience that exceeds expectations.
In conclusion, I want to express my sincere gratitude to Diana and her family for allowing us to be a part of Rodney’s milestone celebration. It was truly an honour, and we look forward to creating more timeless memories through our music.
Thank you for choosing us.
