On Wednesday 13th September I was invited to North Warren Residential Home to sing as part of their 1940s themed tea party. This was an event for residents but families and friends were also invited to attend.
North Warren Residential Home is a small, privately owned home in Gainsborough with bags of character and a range of residents. I was absolutely honoured on arrival to be introduced to their oldest resident Alice, who is a mere 105 years old! Although Alice’s eye sight is failing she was full of conversation and when I asked her what her favourite decades were she said the 30s and 40s when her children were small. What a lovely lady and I so wish I could have stayed afterwards to talk to her some more.
The Activities Coordinator Kerry is clearly a lady who loves her job and the home had gone to a huge amount of effort to put together a fantastic afternoon of 1940s nostalgia. There were cakes and tea aplenty as well as decorations – including the taping of the windows!
I had put together an hour of music – it’s very difficult choosing what songs to squeeze in to 60 minutes so I try and include some toe tapping Glenn Miller, nostalgic Vera Lynne plus the sing-a-long greats of Gracie Fields.
Everyone was joining in an enjoying the music and reminiscing.
This really was a quite lovely afternoon and a huge thanks must go to Kerry for organising such a great event – North Warren are very lucky to have her! I do hope I get the opportunity to go back in the future.
Lots of love,
Jayne x
